John Antonio, 83, the designer of Clemson’s Tiger Paw logo, died Thursday, May 30 in Greenville after a long bout with cancer.
The native of Greenville, SC designed the logo in the spring of 1970 and it was introduced at six separate press conferences around the state of South Carolina, Charlotte and Atlanta, by Head Football Coach Hootie Ingram, Head Basketball Coach Tates Locke, All-ACC running back Ray Yauger and University Vice President Wright Bryan, on July 21, 1970.
For more: See the official press release from Clemson University, HERE.
See John Antonio’s Wikipedia page, HERE.
Clemson was apparently the first American football team to use a tiger paw logo on its helmet.* Click HERE to listen to the June 5th, 2013 ESPNU College Football Podcast about how and why John Antonio developed the tiger paw logo.
*Note: Other teams (such as the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League) had used animal paw print logos prior to John Antonio’s design at Clemson. One listener of the ESPNU College Football Podcast wrote in to the June 19, 2013 show and said that the BC Lions had paw print logos as early as the 1962-63 season. For this reason, Clemson is credited as the first American football team to use such a logo.

Ole Miss seems to be getting the most value for what they are paying considering the job Hugh Freeze has done. One could also argue that Kentucky is getting great value as well considering how well Mark Stoops has done on the recruiting trail.
In terms of “least value,” I would argue that Arkansas is over-paying for Bret Bielema. He is the fourth highest paid coach in the league, and had better start producing wins right away to justify that pay check.
The following salaries are as of July 26, 2013.

*Franklin’s $3 million is estimated due to the fact that Vanderbilt is a private school.

Baylor has always had to find ways to make itself stand-out. I am pretty sure these helmets will do the trick.
Living in the shadow of schools like the University of Texas and Texas A&M cannot be much fun. However, maybe these new gold helmets will garner Baylor a few extra minutes of fame before the 2013 season actually gets started.

Count me among those who previously thought that one had to make a financial contribution in order to be considered a “booster” (for NCAA compliance purposes).
From the NCAA Bylaws:
6.4.2 Representatives of Athletics Interests.
An institution’s “responsibility” for the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics program shall include responsibility for the acts of individuals, a corporate entity (e.g., apparel or equipment manufacturer) or other organization when a member of the institution’s executive or athletics administration or an athletics department staff member has knowledge or should have knowledge that such an individual, corporate entity or other organization:
(a) Has participated in or is a member of an agency or organization as described in Constitution 6.4.1;
(b) Has made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution;
(c) Has been requested by the athletics department staff to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes or is assisting in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes;
(d) Has assisted or is assisting in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes; or
(e) Is otherwise involved in promoting the institution’s athletics program.

Utah has moved to the Pac-12 Conference and BYU has become Independent, however, these two schools are working on an agreement that will allow them to continue their annual rivalry game.
It is good to see that conference affiliation and realignment doesn’t have to end a great rivalry.
While the agreement between these two schools is not yet complete, and while the agreement may only add two more games (for now), I hope that Athletic Directors (like DeLoss Dodds) are paying attention.
