Do you remember when the AP’s college football poll was part of the BCS formula?  Do you remember why the AP decided to remove its poll from the BCS?  It was essentially because the AP didn’t want to make/create the news; they simply wanted to report it.  In other words, the journalists who voted in the AP poll listened to their ethical side and (following a few controversies involving the BCS’ final standings) thought it would be best to recuse themselves from the BCS formula — thus removing any conflict of interest.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the USA Today / Coaches’ Poll.

Finally, in August 2012, Reggie Bush returns his Heisman Trophy

It has been almost two years since Reggie Bush had his Heisman award vacated due to receiving improper benefits while at USC.  Now, in August of 2012, the Heisman Trophy that was presented to Reggie Bush in 2005 is back in the hands of the Heisman Trust.

Depending on who is telling the story, Bush actually forfeited the trophy after the NCAA released its findings on USC (and it was later vacated).  Regardless, everyone was under the impression that Bush had sent his trophy back to New York.  Then, in the summer of 2011, it was reported that Bush’s trophy had not been returned and had gone missing.  After a brief search, the trophy was found a few days later.

The Truth Hurts

While USC deserved some kind of punishment from the NCAA for its infractions during the Reggie Bush era, I am not sure the punishment fit the crime.  Worse yet, I don’t know if the punishment punsihed the wrong-doer.

I have to be careful; or what is starting out as a simple post about a t-shirt could turn into a lengthy comment on NCAA jurisprudence (or the lack there of).  After all, I am still waiting to here about Miami’s punishment for the Nevin Shapiro incident.  Oh well.
