The case for Johnny Manziel to win the Heisman

by Travis Normand

Yes, I am fully aware that my HTML and CSS skills are lacking, and that my table below could be a lot cleaner.  I’m working on this.

However, with all the excitement surrounding Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M, QB) and his Heisman campaign, I thought of some stats that would be interesting to look at.  The table below essentially compares two things.

  1. It compares the 2012 stats of Johnny Manziel against those of Collin Klein (Kansas State, QB).  Why Collin Klein?  Because he, along with Manziel, is considered one of the top two players with a realistic opportunity to win the Heisman Trophy.
  2. The table below also compares Manziel’s (and Klein’s) stats against the last 10 Heisman winners.  The stats for the Heisman winners are from the season in which they actually won the award.  *Note: As of today’s date (Nov. 16, 2012) Manziel and Klein have only played 10 games this season and have at least two more before the Heisman is to be awarded.  The stats for the 10 Heisman winners are for complete seasons of 12, 13, or 14 games.
Player Games Played Rush Yds Rush TDs Pass Yds Pass TDs Tot. Off.

Eric Crouch (QB) 12 1115 18 1510 7 2625

All stats used in the above table where found here: http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs – *Note: If you find any typos or inaccuracies, please let me know by posting a comment below and I will update the table ASAP!  Thank you for the help.

Finally, the following graphic was made by the guys over at GoodBullHunting.com.  They did an excellent job putting this together.  However, while I have the same stats for Manziel (in my table above) as they have on their graphic below, our stats on Klein seem to differ.

Notice the stats that are fifth and sixth from the bottom titled “Games vs. BCS Top 10” and “Wins vs. BCS Top 10.”  Manziel has had three games against the BCS Top 10 and won one of them.  On the other hand, Klein has yet to play against any team in the BCS Top 10.

A&M launches Heisman webpage for Johnny Football

by Travis Normand

In all the years that I have been receiving promotional material on different award candidates from around the country, I have never received anything from Texas A&M.  I was under the impression that, unlike other schools, they didn’t bother sending anything out and didn’t campaign for their players.

However, here is the recently launched award campaign website for Johnny Manziel (and yes, it was launched by Texas A&M).

“I love watching him play, primarily because he reminds me of myself in some of the things he does.”

Nick Saban: Head Coach University of Alabama

“Look, I’ve been around longer than most, and most of our players cant relate to this, but this guy reminds me of Doug Flutie.”

Alabama thinks Texas A&M is not good enough

Alabama v Texas A&M T-shirtby Travis Normand

Before Alabama and Texas A&M faced off on November 10, 2012, someone in Alabama decided they needed t-shirts made specifically for that game. I have no clue why the nation’s number one ranked team, or anyone affiliated with it, would feel the need to make a special t-shirt for that particular game but they did.

Alabama was ranked number one in the country at the time of kick-off, and they were also the defending national champions. Alabama had also won the national title as recently as 2009 as well.

Possible candidates for Texas Tech Football Coach

by Travis Normand

Tommy Tuberville is still the head coach at Texas Tech and might be for a long time.  On the other hand, there is plenty of speculation that Arkansas may have Tuberville at the top of their wish list and we know that the Hogs will be making a change at season’s end.  While there is no guarantee that Tuberville would take the Arkansas job if it was offered to him, he does appear to be an SEC guy — he was the head coach at Auburn for ten seasons (1999-2008) and was head coach at Ole Miss for four (1995-1998).

With Arkansas,Tennessee, Auburn, and even Kentucky all (possibly) looking for a new head coach, there is a good chance that Tuberville will not be in Lubbock much longer.

Hosts at ESPNU are not familiar with Texas A&M’s yells

by Travis Normand

[CFB Daily Week 11 #AwesomeBoard Nominees]

The two hosts of this segment on ESPNU make a pretty big deal out of Texas A&M WR Ryan Swope saying that the Aggies just “beat the hell outta [Alabama].”  After hearing their comments I thought I would share my thoughts about what they said.

  1. A&M did beat the hell outta Alabama, so whats the problem?
  2. Beat the hell outta __[fill in name of opponent]__” — This is a standard yell that is used constantly by Aggies at games, midnight yell practice, etc.  No one, including Alabama, should think that they are getting singled out by the use of this phrase.  This next weekend you will surely hear the Aggies yelling “Beat the hell outta Sam Houston State!

by Travis Normand

I found this over at NDFootball.Wordpress.com (Strong and True, The Notre Dame Football Blog) and wanted to share it.  I am not yet making a case for Notre Dame to be in the National Title game, but this visual representation of how well the Irish defense has played this season is very impressive.

Some people will argue that Notre Dame hasn’t been impressive enough (overall) this season.  However, one cannot argue that the Irish defense has been anything less than amazing against the competition it has played.

The next measuring stick for Notre Dame’s defense will come on November 24, when the Irish face USC.  Of all the opponents that Notre Dame has faced thus far, only one of them has a scoring offense ranked in the top 50 (by points per game) — Oklahoma is ranked 13th at 39.78 points per game.  USC’s offense is currently ranked 26th (tied with Georgia) scoring 36.9 points per game in 2012.  Most pollsters will probably wait and see what Notre Dame is able to do against this USC offense before they decide whether or not the Irish have a legitimate claim to one of the two spots in the BCS Championship game.

Larry and unknown girl Bama fan

by Travis Normand

Here are two Bama fans watching the game last Saturday night (November 10, 2012) in which Texas A&M upset Alabama 29-24. They are watching the game on what appears to be an outdoor projection screen.  I am guessing they were somewhere just outside the stadium.  As you can tell from the video (or the headline above) the guy in the video is named Larry.  I have no idea what the girls name is.
