List of SEC head coaching salaries

by Travis Normand

Ole Miss seems to be getting the most value for what they are paying considering the job Hugh Freeze has done.  One could also argue that Kentucky is getting great value as well considering how well Mark Stoops has done on the recruiting trail.

In terms of “least value,” I would argue that Arkansas is over-paying for Bret Bielema.  He is the fourth highest paid coach in the league, and had better start producing wins right away to justify that pay check.

The following salaries are as of July 26, 2013.

*Franklin’s $3 million is estimated due to the fact that Vanderbilt is a private school.

6.4.2 Representatives of Athletics Interests . . . it’s not just for donors!

NCAA - 25Kby Travis Normand

Count me among those who previously thought that one had to make a financial contribution in order to be considered a “booster” (for NCAA compliance purposes).

From the NCAA Bylaws:

6.4.2 Representatives of Athletics Interests.

An institution’s “responsibility” for the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics program shall include responsibility for the acts of individuals, a corporate entity (e.g., apparel or equipment manufacturer) or other organization when a member of the institution’s executive or athletics administration or an athletics department staff member has knowledge or should have knowledge that such an individual, corporate entity or other organization:

(a) Has participated in or is a member of an agency or organization as described in Constitution 6.4.1;

(b) Has made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution;

(c) Has been requested by the athletics department staff to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes or is assisting in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes;

(d) Has assisted or is assisting in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes; or

(e) Is otherwise involved in promoting the institution’s athletics program.

BYU & Utah Continuing their Rivalry

by Travis Normand

Utah has moved to the Pac-12 Conference and BYU has become Independent, however, these two schools are working on an agreement that will allow them to continue their annual rivalry game.

It is good to see that conference affiliation and realignment doesn’t have to end a great rivalry.

While the agreement between these two schools is not yet complete, and while the agreement may only add two more games (for now), I hope that Athletic Directors (like DeLoss Dodds) are paying attention.

Another QB Leaves University of Texas Football Program

by Travis Normand

According to Horns247.com, Connor Brewer (QB) is leaving (transferring from) the University of Texas football program.  While it may only be my perception, it sure does seem like a lot of good quarterbacks have transferred away from the Longhorn program over the past couple of years.  One has to wonder what is going on in Austin.

Quarterbacks that have recently left the Longhorns behind:

  1. Connor Brewer
  2. Connor Wood (now at Colorado)
  3. Garrett Gilbert (now at SMU)

Normally, numerous transfers would not be something worth writing about.  However, I am making an exception here because these quarterbacks were all considered quality recruits.

Had only one or two quarterbacks decided to transfer, I may not have taken notice.   However, Brewer is the third quarterback since 2010!
