Continuing to Grow

by Travis Normand

It has been slow and steady but the OnePointSafety.com is continuing to grow.  Thanks to all who have visited the site, come back for more, liked a post, posted a comment, etc.  I really appreciate it.

As of right now the OnePointSafety.com has received over 100+ “likes” and 20+ “comments.”  That isn’t a lot by any measure but it is a start.

Thanks again!

Hook and “Double” Lateral

by Travis Normand

Division III Buffalo State uses a hook-and-double-lateral to convert a 4th-and-19 on their final drive of the game in order to upset (No. 1 ranked) UW-Whitewater on 15 September 2012.  After converting the fourth down, Buffalo State continues their drive and caps it off with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Casey Kacz to Ryan Carney with only three seconds remaining.

The Trojans of USC are NOT who you (the AP voters) thought they were!

by Travis Normand

In case you missed it, Stanford defeated USC 21-14 on Saturday evening 15 September 2012, marking the fourth straight win for the Cardinal over the Trojans (and the fifth win in the last six years).

Yes, the Stanford Cardinal defeated USC in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and now 2012.  With such success on the field, one might think that Stanford would be considered a preseason favorite to win the Pac-12 Conference — but they weren’t.

2012-13 BCS Media Guide – Big East Conference

by Travis Normand

2012-13 BCS Media Guide - from Big East ConferenceUpon checking the mail this afternoon, I found a copy of the 2012-2013 BCS Media Guide in my mail box.  The media guide was mailed to me in a Big East Conference envelope.

So, as always, I wanted to say thanks to both the BCS and the Big East Conference.

Thanks to the BCS for sending out a copy of their media guide and thanks to the Big East for picking up the shipping.

The 2012 Colorado Buffaloes; Possibly the Worst Ever

by Travis Normand

In October of 1989 the University of Houston (UH) dismantled SMU by a score of 95-21.  UH’s quarterback Andre Ware threw for 517 yards and six touchdowns in the first half (setting the NCAA FBS record for the “Most Yards in a Half,” see 2011 NCAA FBS record book, page 7).  UH finished the game with an astounding 1,021 total yards (of which 771 were passing and 250 were rushing).

How did UH run up such gaudy offensive numbers?  Simple.  They took advantage of SMU’s inferior situation — being that 1989 was SMU’s first year back from serving a two-year “death penalty.”

1962 Ole Miss Football Team gets National Title Rings

by Travis Normand

Earlier today University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) Athletics Director Ross Bjork [@RossBjorkAD] tweeted this message:

Great to honor our 1962 national champs with new rings!  Love seeing our former athletes on campus.

Most college football fans remember that it was USC that won the 1962 National Championship as USC was awarded the National Title by the AP, the NFF, the FWAA, and the UPI.  However, Ole Miss has claimed a share of the 1962 title by virtue of some other polls and lists the 1962 National Championship on their website.

While the 1962 National Title is up for debate, the 1962 SEC Conference Championship is not.  Ole Miss claimed the SEC title in 1962 with an overall record of 10-0.

So why did the 1962 team get new rings?  Well, I am not 100% sure but I think I have a pretty good guess.  My guess is that whatever ring they received in 1962 only said “SEC Champions,” and did not say “National Champions.”  Now that Ole Miss claims the 1962 national title, they figured it was only right to give the players from that squad a ring that reflected the same accomplishment.

*Note: I asked Ross Bjork, via twitter, for more information on the new rings.  I will update this site as soon as I hear back from him.
