Darrell Royal dies at age 88

by Travis Normand

College football lost another legend today as Darrell Royal has passed away at the age of 88.  As a Texas Aggie, I have a lot of respect for Coach Royal and for what he did for the game of college football.

Obtaining the informal status of “Legend” is becoming harder and harder to do.  However, there is no question that Royal was one of the most well-known Legends of this great game.

Royal was head coach at the University of Texas for 20 years (1957-76).  During this span he compiled a record of 17-3 against Texas A&M.  His first game against A&M was in 1957 where he defeated Bear Bryant’s last Texas A&M squad (before Bryant took the head coaching job at Alabama).  This same 1957 Texas Aggie football team featured A&M’s only Heisman winner, John David Crow.

by Travis Normand

I was informed today that the State Bar of Texas has listed the OnePointSafety.com [OPS] on the Texas law blog page of their website.  I have no idea how they found the OPS but I am honored to have been listed.  I am a proud Texas attorney and would like to thank the State Bar of Texas for listing this site among so many other great blogs.

OPS is one of 139 blogs that are listed on the website.  You can see the entire list of blogs HERE.  OPS is listed under the heading “Hobbies & Humor.”

Happy Birthday College Football . . . I think!?

by Travis Normand
November 6, 2012

First Game - Princeton RutgersOn this day (November 6) in 1869, a game of football was played between teams from Rutgers College (now Rutgers University) and the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University).  Rutgers won the game by a score of 6–4.

This game is considered by most historians as the very first game of intercollegiate football as it appears to be the first documented college football game played between two American colleges.

The 1869 game that was played between Rutgers and Princeton was very different from what we know to be college football today.  For example, in this 1869 game there was no running with the ball, each team included 25 players, and the ball was more spherical than today’s football.

Johnny Manziel, a Heisman finalist?

by Travis Normand

The following video clip is from today’s (November 5, 2012) CFB Daily on ESPNU.

Dari Nowkhah and Coach Bellotti discuss their top 5 Heisman Candidates coming out of Week 10

Note: Nowkhah has Manziel as his number two candidate while Bellotti has him (apparently) as his fifth. To my knowledge, neither Nowkhah nor Bellotti have a vote in the Heisman.

Uniforms: From Aggie to Ugly

by Travis Normand

A couple of months ago I wrote that Texas A&M must be suffering from an identity crisis. My post was only half serious as I was simply not impressed with yet another uniform change.

While reviewing A&M’s new uniforms, I hinted at the fact that their newly unveiled uniforms did nothing to advance the tradition-rich culture that Texas A&M claims to be so proud of.  If you can’t tell, I am more of a traditionalist and would like to see Texas A&M adopt the same mentality.

However, realizing that the uniforms weren’t as ugly as they could have been, I was ready to move on and adjust to the new look.  Unfortunately, moving on was going to be harder than I thought.

by Travis Normand

Click HERE to see the BCS standings as of November 4, 2012. This is the fourth BCS ranking of the 2012 season.

A few of my observations from this week’s BCS standings:

  • Alabama is ranked number one overall in the BCS.  They are ranked number one in both human polls, and have moved to number one in the computer poll (from third) after their victory over LSU on November 3, 2012.

[Video] Mack Brown hates the Longhorn Network

by Travis Normand

Mack Brown and LHN T-shirt

If only Texas had its own network. Oh wait!

Okay, so maybe he doesn’t really hate the Longhorn Network, but he apparently isn’t that crazy about it either.

VIDEO: Brown concerned about Longhorn Network?

This was originally reported by OrangeBloods.com, however, Frank Schwab has a brilliant write-up posted on the “Dr. Saturday” blog (Yahoo Sports) that I highly recommend reading.
